He's Six

It was 6 years ago today that our baby boy came into the world. It's been the case in our family that each of our kids' labors have been true to their personalities. Spencer was born on a Friday, but my labor had started on the Tuesday before. I had intense contractions for two hours and then they just stopped. That Friday, we ate a big pancake breakfast [I know, not the smartest thing to eat before you give birth!] at Avalon Diner in Houston, TX and headed over to the my doctor's office to see what was going on. Turns out I was already dilated 6 inches and since it was my 2nd, the doctor was concerned about sending me back out into the world for the weekend. Thankfully while I was there, I had some strong contractions and was sent to delivery. I can remember saying to the nurse "Maybe this one is going to be my easy-going one, a stop and smell the roses kind of guy." Both of which couldn't be more true about the perfect little man that was born that day.

He's never in much of a hurry -- always on "Spencie-time" -- and doesn't get his feathers ruffled too often. He can find contentment in just being. He could snuggle for hours, happy just to be with you in that moment. He has a passion for art, and has started telling people "I'm going to be a designer like my mom." I almost start crying every time he says it, too. It is an absolute joy to be his mother.

Atlanta // Westside Provisions District

I'm still playing catch-up with holiday travel photos! One of my favorite places to shop & dine while we are in Atlanta is the Westside Provisions District. There are several options for creative, delicious food, and no shortage of unique shops.

My favorite spot to eat is JCT Kitchen [don't miss the lemon drops dispenser on the way out the door!] and my favorite shop is Seed Factory. I had lots of fun in the Jonathan Adler, too, though!

My Kind of Town.

Chicago. Reg and I just got back from a few days there just the two of us. It was glorious. It didn't hurt that we had unseasonably nice weather, but the city itself is pretty unbeatable. This was my first venture to the windy city, and I fell in love with it -- the art, the architecture, the people, the public transportation, the food. Oh my, the food.

We whiled away a few hours at the Art Institute, and walked and walked and walked some more. I miss being in a walking city. There's so much going on! My favorite restaurant of the trip was The Publican [pictured middle row, far left]. I'm still dreaming about their cauliflower gratin. And the brussels sprout salad was surprisingly delicious [I wasn't sure how shredded brussels would taste]. Our server was outstanding and the overall experience was excellent. We also ate at Girl and the Goat, which was also delicious. It had the potential to be my favorite, but the hosting staff there was a bit persnickety. I don't much care for persnickety hostesses. Regardless, our server was fantastic and so was the food. Plus, they get extra credit for that adorable goat [pictured top row, far right].

Hello, 2012

I'm not back in the studio just yet, but I wanted to pop in and wish you all a Happy New Year! Since we stayed at home over Christmas, we spent the weekend celebrating with family in Atlanta. The kids have been quite the troopers with all the extended celebrations/present opening. I kid, of course. I've yet to meet a child that doesn't like opening presents. Or an adult for that matter. Which, speaking of presents, I had a bit of a love affair with tinsel this holiday season, one that I don't think will be ending anytime soon. It's such a happy thing.

Here's to great things in 2012!

The two versions of our holiday cards this year! The first is an accordion style that I'd been wanting to try, and Laura's photography was excellent motivation. I love the way it turned out.

I tried out some gold envelopes on these that I'm thinking about adding to the b.wise collection.

The second is a 5x7" version. I always like to have a traditional size version in case I ever get around to making that holiday card album that has been on my list.

Hi! I'm afraid in all the hurly-burly of card season, the old blog here has taken a hit. To make up for that, I'm going to try for an extra long post. Curious what's been going on around here?

Letters to Santa:

Fred's back:

I've tried to be a little more creative this year with his spot because I fear that this may be the last year that my oldest gets into it. Their favorite place so far was when Fred was in the Halloween candy bowl [yes, I know Halloween was a month and a half ago]. I opened up a candy bar and pinch a little corner off and had it sitting in his lap. When they discovered him in the morning, they came bounding back into our room shouting "Fred's eating candy!! Isn't that crazy?!" Mind you, these exciting spots are only once in a while -- there's only so much time I can put into this at the moment!

Our tree is up, and I get to look at all my favorite ornaments:

Do you vote white or multicolor lights? For my tree, I vote white, but I'd love to have some multicolor lights outside.

There's been lots of packaging going on:

Only now I need to start in on actual presents! Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? I've got a ways to go myself.

I have started in on holiday card addressing. I designed two different ones for us this year -- more on that after I've sent them out!

Laura Negri Photography // Fall 2011

We had the luxury of getting our pictures taken by the ever talented Laura Negri Childers last month, and I could not be happier with the way they turned out. The setting was a path to a polo field near by parent's house. It was 4 o'clock in the afternoon on an Atlanta bluebird-sky day, so the light on the fall leaves was amazing. And Laura captured it perfectly.

My sweet boys. They were total rock stars. There was barely any protest over outfits, no tears and they turned on the charm for the camera. We did bribe them with the promise of candy for good behavior, but nevertheless, they came through like champions.

My sweet girl was mighty uncooperative for the first part of the session. When she gets a bee in her bonnet, it's hard to get her to do anything. Thankfully, she came around towards the end and we were able to get some shots where she wasn't glaring or crying [ie, the first picture; if someone wasn't holding her up like that she would start crying]. But I think that's honestly what makes the pictures so special -- that they capture this particular moment in our life as a family with a 2 year old who is wild, knows her own mind and isn't worried about conforming to what we want her to do. She just is who she is and I love that.

Advent Calendars

You have one more day to make one of your own, so here's some inspiration! I especially love the animal one [#3] -- I'd want to keep that up all year long. And the clean crispness of #4 would make what's inside so colorful and exciting. It could be anything!

I always tell myself that I'm going to make one, but it just doesn't happen because of how busy things are with holiday cards this time of year. I'm really thinking about making one in the summer to put up for December so I can actually do it on time! So this year, same as last year, the boys have Lego Advent calendars. And they could not be more excited. Star Wars + Legos + getting to open something every single day = happy boys.

And I'd love to know: did you make one? If so, what did you put in it?!

Thanksgiving Trees

This past Wednesday I went to Spencer's school to make Thanksgiving trees with some of the kids in his grade. For those who don't know, a Thanksgiving tree is where you record the things you're thankful for and hang them on the tree. They loved it. And it was relatively easy to put together.

My supplies:

-- A branch tree that Reg and I put together. [see below]
-- Paper circles that I cut out of metallic card stock with a circle punch and then punched holes in with a hole punch.
-- White pens. Very exciting.
-- Twine, which we didn't end up using a lot of -- the holes in the circles slipped right on most of the branches.
-- Jingle bells, to give the trees a little bling. They all loved this, by the way. Not only are they shiny, but their trees jingle. Good stuff.

To make the branch trees, Reg sawed a larger branch from a tree that had fallen in our yard into little bases. He drilled a hole in the middle, and -- this is where things get exciting -- I glue-gunned the smaller branches into them. I love any excuse to get my glue gun out.

They love looking at their little tags and talking about what they wrote. Spencer really likes his one that says "Toy 100% luve."

The good news is that Mom got luve 100% too.

So did Dad.

Project Skincare

You had me at "Survival Molecules." I'm trying to take better care of my skin, so while we were in Atlanta two weekends ago, I headed over to Kiehl's to stock-up. I chose Kiehl's because of their use of naturally-derived ingredients. Arthur helped me find some things to up my "beauty regimen" because before, my "beauty regimen" consisted of face soap and Cetaphil moisturizer [which I still love, and slather all over my kids, too. So gentle and keeps their skin baby soft]. I could see the ~~horror~~ concern in his eyes when I mentioned said regimen, and he kept waiting for me to say "Oh, and I also use..." Nope, that's it. Just those two things.

So back to the "Survival Molecules." To be honest, I don't exactly know what that means, but if it'll help my skin survive in some way, then I'm in. And who wouldn't want to slather "Rare Earth" on their face? My skin felt purified at the first mention of those words. I also walked out of there with some Midnight Recovery Eye cream that promises "younger-looking eyes by morning." By morning? Boy howdy! For a mom of three, those are happy words. Oh, and I also got some Ultimate Hand Salve. With cold season upon us, I've been washing my hands like mad.

I'm usually pretty skeptical about products actually doing what they say they are going to do, but after a full week of using this stuff diligently, my skin really does feel better. So thank you, Kiehl's. For your Survival Molecules and Rare Earth and Butcher's Broom Extract and glove-like protective barriers. I am officially hooked.

It's always exciting to unexpectedly see my work out there in this big ole world. On Tuesday, I was sitting at our kitchen island with M, eating our morning oatmeal [she insists that we eat out of the same bowl; I drew the line with the same spoon] and flipping through the latest issue of The Oprah Magazine that had just arrived the day before. And guess what to my wondering eyes did appear? The Minted ad featuring my design Merry Ribbon and Jody Wody's Modern Headline!

I looked at M and said "No Way!!" She just stared at me smiling, like "I have no idea what's going on, but you look happy, so I'm happy, too. Yay!" I'm thrilled.

A Little Something Extra

When my parents came to see us last weekend, my mom brought me a little gift from pieces. What she gave me are some pretty coasters by Trina Turk that I can't wait to use [I'm trying to get my Living Room put together, so if I ever get pictures of it up here, I'll be sure to point them out. They are needlepoint, as in NON-breakable. A must around here!]. But also in the bag were these cute matches. It's one of my favorite things when a store gives you a little something extra just because it's fun and makes people happy. And green matches are definitely fun. And make me happy.

Halloween // 2011

The kids had a blast trick or treating last night, as always. The boys were decked out in their full Star Wars gear and M was an owl. I don't know what it is about Star Wars, but both boys have been obsessed since they could first speak. Never tire of it. I'm not crazy about the so-called "blasters," but I know that even if they didn't have those, they would've found sticks and starting making the blasting noises themselves.

I made M's costume! It was totally easy, and I'm now completely obsessed with my glue gun. I don't sew [wish that I could and hope to one day!], so I got the idea for the shape of the feathers here and the glue gunning felt onto an existing outfit here. For the mask, I bought a foam one and cut out the felt shape to glue on top. She wasn't crazy about it being over her eyes, so for most of the night it was propped up on her forehead. I'm telling you, it took me one afternoon to make this, including a trip to JoAnn's for the felt.

She was a little more into things this year, and was completely fascinated by all the costumes. Sometimes she'd walk right up to someone in a scary costume, point at them and say "bad guy." So funny. I wish I had more pictures of the boys, but they were not interested in the camera or being still for one second. It was hard to keep up with them this year, running so fast from house to house!

Italian Holiday

My junior year in college, I had the privilege of studying abroad in Florence, Italy. That was a decade ago, and I've been plotting my return trip ever since I left. On Holiday is my ode to two things that I like a lot: Italy and Fiats. I figure maybe if I draw about them enough, my return trip will come true.

I had considered putting a tree on top of the car, but then thought that the skis were much more romantic -- two lovers jetting away for the weekend through the Italian countryside to a remote little ski chalet where they sip hot chocolate, sit by the fire wrapped up in cashmere blankets and leisurely flip through the pages of A Farewell to Arms. At least that's what I think of.

Little Darlings

I spotted the amazing photography of Sharon Montrose of The Animal Print Workshop the other day, and wanted to pass the link along. The newest collection is called Little Darlings, and really the name says it all. I also couldn't help being lured in by all the other collections, too, though.

Exhibit A:

Piglet. Oh my goodness. Where do you even start with this one? I think if he were hanging on my wall looking at me it would be impossible to be sad.

Exhibit B:

Kitten and Feather. I know one little girl in particular who is obsessed with "kitty kats" and would love to have this one where she could see it and point to it and name it over and over again.

Florida

If this doesn't scream "Old Florida" [what with the golf clubs, fishing poles, palm tree and old window], then I don't know what does. Last weekend, I took a little jaunt with some friends to Micanopy, my favorite close-by getaway. I picked up some vintage Pyrex dishes with little Amish people on them, too [my too kind and generous friend actually secretly paid for them for me for my birthday while I was checking out some old matchbooks].

They go nicely with my 1960s countertops, no? Countertops that I don't think I could ever bring myself to replace. Even with my soft spot for marble. You just can't buy gold flecked ones anymore!

International Goodies Swap

M's 2nd Birthday Party

We had a small get together to celebrate M's birthday two weekends ago. Since she's our only child who hasn't lived in a big city, I decided to have a city party for her. We built a little city house complete with graffiti on the side walls.

For the favors, I found these little taxis in the clearance section of Target after last Easter. They are kind of what started the whole theme. And no party table is complete without a pair of stuffed nunchucks.

For the invitations, I wanted something distinctly Boston since that's where we had lived, so M took over the famous Citgo sign with her sweet smiling face.

We had brunch and a donut cake that she wasn't so happy about at first.

And she was still super serious while we were opening presents...

...until she opened up a dress. Her first outfit was tossed to the side, and with the new dress came a liking of donuts. Happy times are here again!

And by the end of the party, she was down to her diaper cover.

Which I guess is how most good parties should end, right?!

PS: See those blue chairs? That look a little worse for wear? They are now on their way to Atlanta to be recovered -- I cannot wait!!

Downtown

We hit downtown last Friday...

...for a friend's art show...

...that was amazing. I'll give you one guess who designed that poster. About halfway through the night, I started envying Reggie's shoes...

...I chose style over comfort, and was regretting it.

So much so that I was sitting down on the ground. The gross downtown pavement. I don't even want to think about what has been there. But I was desperate.

Bonus of the night: when the Hares joined the buskers and rocked out:

DIY Printed Masking Tape

Remember how I fawned over Anthropologie's printed masking tape? Last week, I came across this clever tutorial for a DIY version!

Haven't tried it yet because I'm too tape obsessed with my Japanese Masking tape, but it looks pretty simple. Would be a great way to personalize holiday gift wrapping this year!

Two and Two Threes

Can you figure out that riddle? Two years ago today, on my own birthday, our sweet girl was born. It was truly the best birthday present ever, and I don't think I'll ever get a surprise that amazing again in my lifetime.

This little nugget brings buckets full of joie de vivre into our home. She's always up to something, the first of the bunch to get that mischievous glint in her eye and then the first to laugh about what she's accomplished. And this is saying a lot for a girl with two older brothers. She's also the first to climb up onto the sofa with her entourage of stuffys, pat the spot next to her and say "Sit ear" ["sit here"]. When she gets a new dress, she immediately starts to take off the one she's wearing to put on the new one. Same goes for shoes. She blows kisses when we say goodnight, and follows it up with a wave and a "See ewel-ater" [which is toddler-ese for "see you later"].

Happy birthday, sweet girl.

Hello, blogland! Has it really been a week since my last post?? It just doesn't seem possible. I'm afraid posting is going to get a wee bit sparse over the next couple months with holiday card season gearing up. I'm going to try and post at least once a week, even if it's just a snapshot of the whirlwind that is the studio this time of year. Or you may get lucky and it'll be completely random. You just never know!

Anthropologie. They think of the bestest things. Even their tape makes me happy.

And makes me want to hop the counter and snatch the dispenser away from the ringer-upper. But we shouldn't snatch. Or steal. It's not nice. Even when you are obsessed with masking tape. That's printed. But I did tell the her how lucky she was to get to dispense all that tape. And she was all, yea, whatever.

Itching to know what's in there?

Matching turtle dishes. That I don't have a place for yet. But even if I did, I wouldn't be able to set them out without fearing their certain fatal fall down onto the hardwood floors. It's just the way things roll around here right now. But I loved them, and I've always heard that you should buy what you love even if you don't have a place for it right that second. So I did. And I will.

Caliza

Our second stop at Alys Beach was dinner at Caliza, the poolside restaurant. Yes, I drool over the white delectableness that is Alys. I can't help it.

The one thing that I didn't really like were those metal pool rails. Why did they have to make them swirl around like that? It reminds me of those picture frames with the translucent colored stones on them that have wires that make a little swirl pattern around the stones. Do you know the ones? They were all over my dresser in middle school. Alongside my fabric-strip-decorated banana clips. So, if I could change one thing, it would be the pool railings. They should've consulted Jeff Lewis on those.

OK, back to the drooling...

See those little box house looking things in the back? Those are private cabanas. Some of them even have TVs in them. Do you think there are fist fights in the morning over who gets the best cabana?

I must go back. Soon. It's so yummy. So is the food. I had a Fried Green Tomato BLT that had fried oysters on it -- need I say more? And our waiter was so nice. And so were the restrooms. Who doesn't like nice restrooms, right?

Fonville Press

You had me at "Magazines." After I got back from San Francisco, we packed up the car and headed to the Gulf Coast to meet up with my family. Our house was down the road from Alys Beach, and one morning we took the kids over to Fonville Press. Aside from being a hip little cafe, it has by far one of the coolest playgrounds I've ever been to.

Being in Alys Beach makes me want to slather white concrete all over my house, trim everything in rich dark wood and hang up a red awning. I took extensive pictures of the patio at Fonville Press in the hopes of recreating it behind our house, knowing full well it would only be an ugly stepsister in comparison, but maybe a sister just the same?

[I was tempted to Photoshop out that overflowing trash can because it just seems wrong.]

Also in the name of said recreation, I nudged Reg over to the grounds keeper to find out what plants were there. The vine that grows up over the patio [see it growing up the white columns?] is a Chocolate Vine. Cool, right? Easy, no? If only we could recreate the grounds keeper too.

[My little peeps were hot. Oh so hot. Even though there were wicker-camouflaged fans. And the littlest one gets mighty miffed when she's hot.]

I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area!

Meet Sophie

I'm sure that lots of you know Sophie, but for those of you who don't, meet Sophie. Sophie was born in 1961 in France, and knows a thing or two about entertaining babies. She's made of 100% natural rubber derived from the Hevea tree, painted with food paint, and is still produced the same *secret* way she was 50 years ago.

My sister gave Sophie to M when she was younger, and I'd hear her in her crib just squeaking away. Which leads me to the point of this post, which is that Sophie makes an excellent gift for babies. She'd be perfect for a boy or a girl, she's lightweight so shipping is a breeze, and she's so darn adorable that she's sure to make even the most sleep-deprived mom smile when she opens her up.

Add a cloth bag with a cute tag and she's ready to go!

PS: I have in no way been paid to endorse Sophie. I just like her, and since I'm always on the lookout for a perfect baby gift, I thought you might be too!

San Fran

Finally, some trip pictures! My first stop was in San Francisco to see the folks at Minted. I was beyond thrilled to see where all the Minted magic happens, and even more excited to get to spend some time with people that I communicate with mainly over email. Everyone could not have been more welcoming, and I was totally inspired by the hard-working and creative forces they've got out there.

Since I work mostly by myself all day, I had more fun in this open office environment brainstorming, seeing new designs, gossiping by the water cooler. There actually wasn't much gossiping, but I did discover two fellow Housewives watchers, so that counts a little I think. What else? Oh, so I was filmed for a video, which I feel the need to forewarn everyone right here and now that it might not be pretty. Let's just say that those types of things aren't really my forte, if you will. I don't remember a word I said, and afterward I practically begged the videographer to please edit my lines as much as possible. One second snippets are cool with me.

We ate dinner at a restaurant called Town Hall. It was delish.

And the company could not have been better.

I had a couple of hours to walk around toward the end of the trip [this was my first time in SF], so I headed out toward the Piers, hoping to see the Golden Gate Bridge. I think it may have been too foggy? I don't know what was up, but I couldn't find it. I did see lots of hills and trolleys and sea lions and Alcatraz and a street named "Larkin," which was surely after my sister's husband's family.

The hills were crazy! See how everyone has their tires turned in toward the curb? There are signs telling drivers to "curb your tires." I don't know why but I was intrigued by that...maybe because it felt so uniquely San Francisco?

For lunch one day, we ate at this amazing Greek restaurant that had a gigantic fireplace:

It was such a great trip, and I hope to make it out there again sometime soon!

I designed this notebook to record gatherings and celebrations -- what was served, what happened, who was there. It could also make a fantastic storybook if passed around to guests for their input from the day/night.

You guys, I've seen a prototype of these notebooks and they are going to be beautiful. I think they'll be the perfect way to check off your holiday gift list. I can't wait to see which designs are chosen!

First Day of School // 2011

The boys headed off to their first day of school today, officially a 2nd grader and a Kindergartner. We live close enough to walk, which is especially helpful since the school day starts at 7:45AM. That's actually the late bell. They have to be there around 7:30AM. That's a wee bit early for me. I'm more of a 9AM gal.

And S likes to take his time in the morning, so I was nervous about how this early thing was going to go for him. When he walked into his classroom and would barely look up to make eye contact, his teacher chuckled and said "You're not a morning person, are you?" There were no tears, but some decidedly not-so-thrilled little faces.

We couldn't just leave after those faces, so we loitered around their windows for a bit.

It was harder for me to take my 2nd to Kindergarten than my 1st. I'm not sure why. But it does make me wonder what it'll be like with the 3rd!

Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch

It was this very night 9 years ago that Reginald and I said "I do." Our band was the best. No shortage of personality there. At one point during the night, they had us up with them singing Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch. The only problem for me was that the guy kept cramming the mike in my face and I didn't want it to touch my mouth because who knows where that thing has been, so I was practically a sway back up there. It was such a fun night, the start of a wild journey with my most favorite person in the whole wide world.

I spent most of the day at the Apple Genius Bar trying to figure out a computer glitch, but I did sneak a piece of Adam's PB Fudge Ripple into the house to surprise Reg with tonight. It's his fave!

PS: Yes, the photo is a scan. Digital photography was just bursting on the scene back in ole 2002, so all of our photos are solely in an album. Crazy how that would have changed if we'd gotten married even just a few years later!

Home Again

Stacks and Things

My house has been overrun with piles and stacks over the past couple of days.

Shambles, I tell you. I've been packing for a trip and trying to ship out all the orders that needed to be gone before I left. It's never easy closing up shop, but I couldn't be more excited about this opportunity.

Thankfully, I had this little helper to tell me "Ess you" whenever I sneezed. Toddler-ese will never get old.

And this little helper, too, who wanted to come along in my suitcase.

And this helper, too, who was around to ask me lots and lots of questions. Like for instance, do I know how tall Michael Jordan is?

I'm going to miss all my people when I'm gone. I don't think I've ever been this far away from all of them before. I'm sure I'll get over it pretty quick, though, when I'm strolling the 62 degree streets of San Fran! It's going to be a nice change from our hot and sweatiness.

I'll be away from the old blog for a bit, so cheerio for now!

The Perfect Match

Every now and again I like to chat a little bit about my design process. [I posted about two of my holiday 2010 designs here]. Today, let's talk about the design The Perfect Match available for sale at Minted. The challenge was for Save-the-dates, and I knew I wanted to do something with a matchbook. One because I love matchbooks, and if I spot a basket full of matchbooks at, say, a restaurant, they need to restock by the time I've left.

And two because I love a good play on words. So, I started sketching.

I'm also a little bit obsessed with Adios Script, and thought it would be the perfect complement to a matchbook illustration. For the colors, I wanted something feminine juxtaposed with something bold, hence the pale pink and deep red.

It's also available with backer options. You gotta love a backer, right?

Do Your Homework

Those three words would have been way more happy for me growing up if my desk had been stocked by Present & Correct.

Their mission is to spark a distant memory, make you smile or look at the most mundane in a new, and fonder, light. And I'd have to say that they've succeeded.

The collection is a mix of handmade goods, vintage items and work by designers from all over the world with no shortage of eye candy.

It's been so nice to have a break from homework this summer. It might actually have become my favorite thing about summer. H doesn't like it one bit, so it's always a battle, and I'm sure second grade will only bring more our way. But thankfully, we still have about another month before we have to start tackling it again, and I'm going to enjoy it!

Golden Gogos

The other day, my oldest came home from camp asking for gold Gogo's Crazy Bones. He said everyone at camp was trading them and he *needed* some too. Since we've been through the gamut of trading toys [Pokemon cards, Silly Bandz, Club Penguin, Bakugons], I'm always a little bit skeptical whenever a new something is introduced that they *must* have or they'll live a torturous, I-have-nothing-to-trade life. Because it's only a matter of time before they get sick of that something and the discards are all over the house.

After much begging and pleading and promises to "spend his own money," we head out to the toy store. He only has about $4, mind you, because he's always "spending his own money" or having to replace something that he's destroyed, like his sister's inflatable swim pool that he so sweetly popped. [He said he was bored and found these dull garden clippers in the garage, so wanted to see what would happen. Now he knows.] Anyway, we make it to the store, and he finds the tin. It's definitely more than $4, but we make a deal about some extra chores and sleeping in on Saturday [Yes, we bribe our kids to sleep-in on the weekends. When it comes to sleep, I'll do whatever it takes.]

When we get back in the car and he opens the package, I have to resist the urge to snatch it right out of his hands. Really. These little guys are so darn cute! So adorable that I gave some to a friend for her birthday last weekend. A little risky, I know. I thought, she's either going to love these or think that I've lost my mind. Thankfully, it was the former, and she appreciated their golden cuteness as much as I do.

Did you have trading fads at your camp or school growing up? I used to trade those charms for the plastic charm necklaces that were so big in the 80s. You know, the ones with the little bells on the clips of the charms? My favorite charm was the roller skate. We used to hit Sparkles Roller Skating Rink quite a bit during those hot Atlanta summers!

Summer Reading

Alright, friends -- got any summer reading recommendations? I just finished reading The Hunger Games series, and I know that it is classified as YA, but I couldn't help myself. It was so good, a real page-turner, and in my opinion, a perfect summer read. A little dark? Yes. But the questions it asks are so important. But now, here I am. In that bittersweet place of having just finished a good good good series, and now it's over and I'm craving something else.

The first thing I do when I get the mail, is quickly scan it for "good" mail: hand addressed envelopes, announcement-looking envelopes, check-looking envelopes, and magazines. The rest I usually leave for Reggie to deal with. I'm sweet like that. Once I've determined the good mail, I get to opening. And when I open to find a thick, almost board stiff note? That's orange and white, no less? With a heart? It's definitely good.

But what surprised me most, was that it was from Poppin! Remember the new online shop with the fantastic packaging? Them. Just checking in to see if I liked what I bought.

And I do like what I bought, especially my tape dispenser.

So go order something from them! It's really fun.

Perry Video Productions

Perry Video Productions in Houston, TX has been in business for 9 years running, producing the most beautiful wedding videos. It also just so happens to be the company of my close friends Julie and Jack Perry. Remember our recent Disney trip? While we were sitting in a Saloon in Frontierland eating carved turkey and carrot sticks, we caught up on what was going on in their business. They've been filming with the new DSLR Canon Cameras for HD Film Production, and having seen their finished product, I have to say that their videos are nothing short of a true treasure. With their clean, unfussy design aesthetic and quality film equipment, any couple can feel confident about having Perry Video capture their special day. Plus, I can only imagine how much fun it would be to have them around filming!

21 Months

M is 21-months-old today. Seems like a random month to record, but the day Henry turned 21 months, I was headed to the hospital to deliver Spencer, so I always think about it as this milestone month.

I look comfortable, no? When I look back on these pictures, I just can't believe how young Henry was but at the time seemed so big to us. And all I gotta say, is that I'm glad I'm not diving back into that world right now -- a 21-month-old and a newborn is a lot to handle!

I'd only heard about in passing a while ago, but it really caught my attention when I saw the collection identities by Kelli Anderson. The combination of her charming illustrations and stellar typography make for some truly great design.

A 5-yr-old's Suitcase

Seeing what Spencer had packed all by himself in his little orange suitcase was one of those moments where I thought that I wasn't going to be able to take one more second of this little man growing older. He can usually be found off in his own world somewhere, which I don't know if that is a personality thing or a defense mechanism for dealing with a make-my-presence-known older brother and younger sister. But, I love seeing what he comes up with.

I knew he had packed his suitcase, but I had no idea what was in it until we got to the hotel last Thursday and he unpacked everything. By himself. Finding the perfect spot for all of his treasures.

His lantern, a necessity in any hotel:

His bouncy ball, that found a cozy home in one of the hotel glasses:

Superman and Wonder Woman and a cellphone:

His stuffed animals, neatly tucked by the spot he chose to sleep:

And last but certainly not least, his whistle, stashed on the bathroom vanity shelf:

You just never know when you might need one of those.

I had so much fun with my boys in the hotel. We swam until way past dinnertime, then came up and ordered room service and watch the NBA finals. Spencer fell asleep pretty quick:

But Henry would've stayed up to watch the whole game if I let him.

When he did finally fall asleep, I looked over at him and wondered, when, when, when did you get so big? He's almost the length of the bed!

He told me that night that he was going to be in the NBA. And then he asked if I would come to all of his games. And then I almost started crying because I always want him to want me around. I told him that of course I would. Wouldn't miss it for the world. To which he asked, "If I was playing would they give you free tickets?" Yep, they sure would, buddy.

The Magic Kingdom

Back from Disney, had a blast! 5 and 7 are perfect ages for the Magic Kingdom. We pulled into the parking lot at 8 AM and drove out of the lot at 11:30 PM. A full day, but so much fun.

The most fun part for me was getting to spend the day with the Perrys, our old friends from Houston. Henry and Jackson were born two months apart, and spent the first two years of their lives [before we moved to Boston] as big buds.

How about a little flashback?

Spencer and Annie were also born about two months apart, but sadly we moved when Spencer was only 5 months old [Annie, 3 mos], so they didn't get as much time together. But everyone got along great, which I was excited about because you just never know how these things are going to work out, you know?

We rode Buzz Lightyear three times. The first two times were by choice, the third time because Spencer had a little freak out about not getting to ride with Jackson -- which in all fairness to him, it was his turn -- so we waited another 30 minutes to get back on the ride. By this point, we were all pros. Julie even got a 212,000 score, which I think was Super Space Ranger status? It's a fun ride, especially for this age group.

We ate lots of ice cream, because when in Disney do as the Disnians do...

The most stylish Disnians I saw were these ladies from It's a Small World:

That ride is a classic -- loved it as much this time as 20+ years ago.

The street dance parade was a favorite of mine, too. Kids have the best dance moves and are so unselfconscious. And man, those dancing Disnians really get down.

Both boys said their favorite ride was Peter Pan. My favorite was Splash Mountain. It doesn't get much better than that.

Good times were had by all!

I'll end this post with my top 5 tips for Disney:

1. Go early! We rode Pirates of the Caribbean, It's a Small World, Peter Pan, The Haunted Mansion and Snow White plus had time for an ice cream break all in the first 1.5 hours. There are no lines first thing in the morning. Peter Pan was already starting to fill up at about 9:30 AM.

2. Pack water bottles and snacks. Everything in the park is super expensive but you can take food and drinks [non-alcoholic -- the guy inspecting my bag told me someone just tried to smuggle in a 12-pack -- really?!] into the park. The food is pretty gross and pricey, so I'd even consider packing lunch.

3. If you aren't staying in the resort, leave earlier than you think. It took us about 30 minutes to get from where we parked to the Magic Kingdom. And if you can swing it, I'd recommend staying in one of the hotels in Disney, on the monorail.

4. Use the Fast Pass system! This system rocks. For Splash Mountain, the wait time was 65 minutes. With the Fast Pass, we waited about 5 minutes. I highly recommend timing things out to where you do the popular rides using the Fast Pass so you don't have to wait.

5. And lastly, go into it just expecting that it's going to be crowded and at times crazy, but it's worth it to see their little faces light up when they are experiencing something so new. I was so confused when I would see adults look annoyed at excited [and admittedly rowdy] kids. If you can't be wild and excited at Disney, where can you be?!

They are 7 and 5 yrs old, and this will be their first time at the Magic Kingdom. Should be great ages for enjoying everything...except the waiting, of course. Waiting isn't so fun at any age. But the greatest part of our trip is going to be meeting up with old friends from Texas. I really can't wait for that. Will be back next week with -- hopefully -- some happy pictures and stories!

We were in Savannah last weekend with family, and I wanted to share some of the pictures that I finally uploaded. Have you ever been? It's one of my favorite cities. The architecture and squares are unbeatable.

My dad was actually born in Savannah, his mom and dad born there as well, so I always feel like there is a part of me there when I visit. We spent most of the weekend on the beach:

But on the way out of town, we ate lunch in a square that just happened to be right outside the church that my grandmother used to play the organ in way back when:

They don't quite understand what it means yet to go back to a place where your family once lived and worked and walked around, but I like showing them anyway.

Preschool Picture Day

They are his favorites. Well-loved for sure. I bought them for Henry [who is 7] when he was 18 months. That was 5+ years ago and they have been worn ever since as evidenced by the holes and fading.

Can you guess whose outfit won?

I actually think the outfit nicely offsets the faux rainforest setting in the background, no? And his teacher made the mistake of trying to comb his hair, too. I laughed when she told me that. The boy has too many cowlicks to ever get his hair in one specific direction! Really, though, I'll probably love the picture that much more because of these things and how it reflects the little man that he is. One of my favorite school pictures is of Reg wearing a t-shirt that says "Have you hugged me today?" Priceless. And I think his hair was sticking up, too.

So today, I can check "embrace imperfection" off my to-do list. Most of the time, imperfect is actually perfect, you know?

Smile Because It Happened

I came across this quote in Rue Magazine:

And it did make me smile, and made me think about how nice it feels to embrace the movement of time.

To live in the moment. Find the good. Hold onto it.

And move forward.

Feel incredibly lucky that I was there. That for a moment in time I held their sweet little hands, smelled their perfect babyness, kissed their soft cheeks, heard their "b's" instead of "v's".

And smile.

Because it happened. And I got to be there.

Meet-Ups

Last Friday, I went to the Minted meet-ups in Atlanta. The first was brunch at West Egg Cafe -- delicious food, retro-chic atmosphere, and most importantly, fabulous company.

And a crop of the new Minted tees adorned with amazing hand lettered cards by Sydney:

You know I'd love any place that had vintage school supplies on the table:

If I were going to gut my kitchen, I'd be tempted to do blue cabinets, marble countertops and a white subway tiled backsplash. Don't think I could pull off the open shelving, but I sure like the way it looks.

West Egg was also just featured in Rue Magazine:

So basically, it's a must go if you are in the ATL!

The second meet-up was at Bocado. We sat out on the back deck and enjoyed drinks and appies. They make a mean Gimlet. And the appies were yum, too.

Thanks to Minted for hosting these get-togethers -- for an independent designer who usually sit at my computer all day, it's nice to actual get out once in a while!

Baby Love

The Play Pen

Did you have one? Growing up, we sure did. That's an 11-month-old me in the picture above, looking forlornly over our 1970's Playpen during my older sister's birthday party. It was a big square with mesh sides and that yellow oil cloth type fabric on the bottom and wrapped around the top rim.

My neighbor has mentioned on occasion -- those occasions where Maggie is performing one of her death defying acts, hurling herself off or onto something -- "You know, my mom used the play pen when we were little." It always makes me laugh because if I ever tried to put M into one she would scream her head off until I got her out -- or until she finagled a way to get herself out. Plus, they only make "Pack-n-plays" these days, which aren't the same. So, it made me smile when I saw this picture in Paper Maiche magazine:

The play pen is alive and well! If only I'd known this early enough to establish it. Although, I'm still not convinced that it would've worked anyway. And I do have to wonder if kids actually go in that one...doesn't seem likely from the pictures, but then what other purpose would that serve in the middle of a living room?!

Sweet Dresses

These organic dresses from Whitten Grey are too sweet. Do the cuts, colors and patterns remind you of paper doll dresses or is it just me? Either way, I'd take the dresses and that cute haircut!

But speaking of paper dolls, I've spotted a few takes on them lately. This feature from Small Magazine:

Maybe they're coming back...or maybe they never left, and since until recently I was focused on boy things I didn't notice!

Color Collections

I'm so taken with these color collections by Kontor Kontur. The compositions, the colors, the shapes of all the different items -- it's all so intriguing. Plus the fact that they are largely made up of office supplies doesn't hurt either.

When we were little, we used to get those big ole Service Merchandise catalogs in the mail. My sisters and I would play this game in the toy section where you had to pick one toy from each page. That was the only rule: one item, each page. Even in the boy section, you had to pick one. So now I ask you:

If you had to choose one thing from each of the collections pictured here, what would you choose?

My answers: From the white, I would probably choose one of the stamps, because I heart a good stamp. That library receipt-looking pad was calling to me, but I'm going to stick with a stamp. And from the red one, I would have to pick that red stapler on the right. Although, it was hard to pass up that little hole punch.

My Birthday Party Essentials

We had a small birthday party for Henry this past weekend, and since this month has been crazy busy, I didn't have a lot of time to plan -- I didn't even send out an invitation. Not even Paperless Post. Not even an Evite. He picked his seven guests and I sent their parents a quick email. While I was thinking about what we were going to do with these 7 kids, I broke things down into our tried and true party hits. Here is my very own Essentials Guide to throwing a party for a 7-yr-old boy with not a lot of time and without breaking the bank. If you do these 3 things well, your guests and the birthday boy are sure to be happy.

1. THE CAKE

I usually just make a cake because I like baking when I can. But this year, Henry was begging for a Basketball Cake from Publix, so since we weren't doing a whole lot of other things for the party, I got him one.

And he loved it.

2. THE PINATA

A tried and true crowd-pleaser, this will get any party guest excited.

A few more years, and M will have the whole pinata thing down.

They also played a lot of Basketball, and we set up a couple water balloon relays, which they loved.

3. THE FAVORS

There's nothing like a good favor to send your party guests away happy.

I found the small packages of Mighty Beanz at Target on clearance for $0.75, added some sports pencils, sour patch kids and whistles that Weez picked up at Richard's Variety store for $0.99. We had a scavenger hunt at the end of the party where the last clue led them to their favors. Kids this age love scavenger hunts, and it was especially exciting for them when they reached the end and there was a little package waiting for each of them.

And lastly, an essential for the party planner, an adult beverage once all the guests have gone home:

Weez came rolling into town with this bottle of SkinnyGirl Margaritas, so after the kid party was over, the adult party began!

Fave Flowers

Twelve Kisses

Hey there, friends, and happy Friday! I'll leave you this weekend with a little collection of my grandmother's Mother's Day letters and Telegrams, the latter being the email of the 1930's, I guess. A big difference to me with telegrams, though, is that they are still tangible, and can be saved in a shoebox -- or a hosiery box as was the case with these. And one day maybe a granddaughter can stumble upon them and be so happy to have found a small piece of a different era. And then post them on her blog. Or whatever the platform will be in 80 years!

Some of my favorite parts:

--How on most of them, my grandmother [who is in the picture with her mom] signs with one of her nicknames "Jab" or "Sugar." We are big nicknamers, so I love this. I love knowing that those names were what her parents called her. And that a lot of people probably had no idea.

--"To the finest mother in all the world." I think we should bring back the adjective "finest."

--"Love is what I love you."

And lastly, my most favorite:

--"I am sending you twelve kisses."

Whether you are a mother or will be celebrating a mother or grandmother or sister who is a mother, I hope that you too will receive twelve kisses.

It's Bike Month!

Did you know that May is National Bike Month? It is, for real. I heart bikes a lot. And I try to ride one as often as I can. There's something so freeing about riding a bike -- the quiet, the fresh air, no rules, no traffic.

When I can, I'll pick up the kids like this:

Yes, people stare at me because I have so many attachments and kids on my bike. But stare away, I say.

However, as I've mentioned before, I wouldn't mind consolidating all the trappings into this sweet thing:

Royal Bingo

Are you going to watch the big wedding tomorrow? I've got it on my DVR list -- excited to watch, but definitely not going to sacrifice sleep to do it! Boden published a fun wedding catalogue, filled with trivia and DIY projects to celebrate the wedding. My particular favorite -- and what I will make my mom and sister play with me when they come visit next weekend and we watch together -- is the wedding BINGO!

I especially like how it is described as "A game of buttock-clenching concentration and endurance," and I might even make them put some money on the game just to spice things up a bit.

I wonder if I could get my kids to start saying "buttock" rather than the abbreviated version? I'm sure that vocab word would fit right in on the playground here in North Florida.

A 7-yr-old

Our 7-yr-old.

How can it be? When he was a baby, I'd see older kids and think to myself "No way he's ever going to be that old. And carry a backpack." But here we are, and my snaggle-toothed little man is 7. And he has a backpack. And has lunch in the cafeteria without anyone making sure that he eats his healthy food first.

He'd rather kick a soccer ball or dribble a basketball more than pretty much anything else. Besides having sorbet. Yes, sorbet. When we go to the ice cream shop, he chooses Mango Sorbet. Or Lemon if they have it.

Six has been my favorite age with him so far, so I'm a little sad to say good-bye to it. His sweetness, his earnestness -- hopefully those qualities will stick around even through moody-snotty-teenage years.

Happy birthday, my sweet boy.

Easter Weather Whiplash

This past Easter, we celebrated in 90 degree weather:

A far cry from Easter in Cambridge, where the boys would wear hats and winter coats to hunt eggs!

Somewhere in the middle of these two extremes would be nice...just sayin'.

And thankfully, my kids also have cuter Easter baskets now. That one Spencer is holding looks like it came from some mail order sausage and cheese company. He can barely get his little hand around the handle!

Howdy, and Happy Friday. We've got a weekend full of soccer games and Easter celebrations. My kids asked me if the Easter Bunny was going to come to our house, and I pulled the "Oh, um, I'm not sure, but I'm super busy washing dishes right now" parenting technique. We've never celebrated Easter that way before, and it's too hard for me to pretend that a giant bunny hops over and brings gifts. Plus, that's not really what I want the focus to be. But if I tell them there isn't an Easter bunny, then what do I say about Santa and the Tooth Fairy and Leprechauns? Would the gig be up?

Anyway, on to less conflicting matters. How great are these paper puppets by Ferzechan?

The Anatomy of a Cupcake

Because I love cupcakes, diagrams and good photography, this print caught my eye a few weeks ago. I bookmarked it, then forgot about it, then saw it again on JHill's Pinterest, still liked it, and thought you might like it too!

All that Glitters

This is not going to be a cutting edge craft post, but recently, I happened upon some sequin confetti, and thought "where has confetti been all my life?" You guys, it's the best. It's so easy and uncomplicated to enjoy, and adds the perfect little embellishment to drawings. We don't do a ton of art projects around here that involve more than paper, markers and colored pencils...and the occasional stamps, but only when M isn't around. Why, you ask? Because of more than one traumatic kid-crafting experience that ended with all of us nearly in tears.

But this. This is an easy, surefire way to make all involved happy. We grabbed some construction paper, crayons and glue, and went for it. I like to cover my tabletops with Kraft paper whenever glue is involved. Spending my evening scraping up glue bits is not my idea of a good time. I'd rather be watching Swamp People, you know?

Can we please just take a moment to observe the state of our crayons:

No matter how many new boxes I buy, the majority are reduced to pieces in no time. This would have driven me batty when I was little.

S is almost always the first one to jump into anything art related.

I love the open-mouth concentration look.

And I love how these little feet don't touch the ground.

At first, H didn't want to fool with the sequins, but I finally convinced him that there are few things scarier than a dragon with sequin eyes.

So in conclusion, it's all about the little things -- especially sparkly little things. And projects that don't lead to tears. And yelling. And locking myself in the bathroom.

18 MONTHS

M actually turned 18 months at the end of March, but I guess this is what happens with the 3rd -- the milestone is recognized, maybe just a bit late. And knowing what I know of her little personality so far, I'd bet that she'd think it was funny. This girl's got quite a sense of humor, and has managed to wrap us all around her little finger, even the baby boy, who wasn't so keen on her to begin with. At this point in her little life, she's got about a thousand nicknames: magaloo, loo loo, mags and the like. And sometimes "bobby" because she screeches like a bobcat when she doesn't get what she wants.

And she's a wild one. We made it through two rounds of toddler boys, and it's our girl who chips her tooth! I don't know if it's because she has two brothers, but so far I can't tell much difference between boys and girls. If they are wrestling, she will jump right on top of the pile-up. I like a girl who isn't afraid to jump in and let her presence be known, all with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

Our best neighbor friend had a birthday last weekend, and I enlisted the talents of Yasmine Mol to create custom pet portraits of her two pups.

When they arrived, I literally wanted to hang them straight up on our walls! This is the second time I've worked with Yasmine, and not only is she crazy talented, but she is great to work with. She was traveling through Asia -- in Vietnam -- but completely got it done for me in time for the big day.

I decided to mat them since I was giving them as a gift. White mats, white backing boards, some artist tape, and clear bags to top it off:

I always feel much better once things are wrapped in clear plastic bags. It's only a matter of time around here before something gets spilled or drawn on.

If you or someone you love [wait. isn't that normally followed by "has been injured in an accident?!] has a pup they hold near and dear, I'd highly recommend contacting Yasmine. It's a sure hit!

Best Hospital Newborn Pictures Ever

A Nephew!

This little bundle of sweetness arrived today into the arms of my older sister. We have three precious nieces, and I love adding a little man to the mix. I only wish I were there to give him lots of snuzzles! It really is almost painful to look at his picture and talk to my sister and not be able to be there with them. Hopefully soon I will get to meet him! Love you, Baby J.

A Day in Atlanta

Okay, so this may totally bore you if you aren't like me and, well, nosy. Last Friday, I documented [most] of my day while we were visiting in Atlanta. When we visit, I usually have lots of things to check off my list, so this is a typical errand day. Next time, I'll try to document a kid day there because there are so many great things for kids to do in Atlanta.

9:22 -- I start out with my sister in the passenger seat.

I was born and raised in ATL. Born at Piedmont Hospital and lived in several different houses in Buckhead, Vinings and near Chastain Park. My parents used to be house flippers, and I was known to tell my mom "My room is dirty. It's time to move." All this to say that I can get you around town using mostly back roads, which is definitely my preferred method because not only can you avoid the gnarly traffic, but you also get the scenic route.

Spring is by far my favorite season in my hometown -- the hydrangeas, flowering trees, green grass, tulips -- it makes me so happy. Yes, I think I'd have to say the snowball hydrangeas are my all time fave.

Weez wanted me to show you this house:

It's one if her faves with the ivy crawling up the front. This gal has got great things ahead, and I'm excited to see the guest house she's going to build me one day. Just sayin'.

We are headed to get some bloomers for Mags at The Children's Shop.

Are monogrammed bloomers a Southern thing? She doesn't wear them all the time, but I have a dress that I bought for her in Copenhagen last summer that didn't come with bloomers and I'm trying to match it. I ordered white bloomers with a circle monogram in cream. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Next stop, checking out Laura's studio! I was so excited to see what was going on, and I love her new studio. It's right in the middle of everything, but feels calm and peaceful inside.

11:15 -- We race to my 11:00 haircut appointment. If you are in the area and looking for a good haircut, call Seldon. She's the best.

She's opening up her own salon next month that will be on Pharr Road off Peachtree. I decided at the last minute to get bangs. Loved them at the salon, but then got back to the horrendous humidity down here and realized they were probably a mistake! Oh well -- I like trying new things and can always pull them back.

1:00 -- Lunch. We ate at the Buckhead Bread Company and it was scrumptious.

That dude in the back is all "are you taking my picture?" Why yes, I am. For my blog. Anyway, I ordered Potato Soup and a Fried Green Tomato BLT because when in the south, do as the southerners do. Weez and I actually halved our sandwiches, so I also got to have the chicken salad. It was fantastico.

After lunch, we hit Lenox. Can I just tell you how much I look forward to going here? Is that weird? Because malls aren't usually the most fun places.

But there are so many great stores here and I have so many memories of being here in High School, racing around the giant speed bumps behind the mall in my friend's white Jeep, listening to Rusted Root. Plus, practically speaking, I can't get a lot of things where we live that I can at Lenox. And there are always better sales here, too, and I love a good sale.

A few hours later, we make a stock-up stop at T.Joe's [forgot the camera]. On the list: coffee, Stockyard beer, Fig bars, Sunflower Butter and Sweet and Savory trail mix. Plus some other things that found their way into my cart.

Now we are headed back home for dinner. I can't remember what time it was at this point, but probably around 5? The littlest munchkin is waiting at the door. She was with her dad and some friends at Piedmont Park and the Botanic Gardens. Both excellent places to take kids, especially when it is so pretty outside.

With Weez around, I know dinner is going to be good. Tonight we are having Jeffrey's Roast Chicken, Roasted Butternut Squash and Stilton and Pecan salad. Mmmmmmmmm.

The boys had been at the zoo with my parents, and had a blast. I'm sure all the cotton candy and toys had nothing to do with it, either.

After the kids are bedded down, we caught the Swamp People marathon. You guys, I'm hooked. Who knew there was so much drama in reality alligator hunting? There's this one guy named Willy who is a complete Bad-A when it comes to catching those rascals.

He says he was still inspecting the armoire, but we knew better.

Road Trip

We headed to Atlanta last Thursday and stayed for a long weekend. Driving with 3 kids for hours on end is not my favorite thing to do, but things went smoothly this time around. All three of them even slept at the same time on the way there. It was only for 30 minutes, but I'll take what I can get!

To keep things real, here's a clip from the drive back. It's pouring down rain almost the entire 5+ hour drive and we are hauling a trailer carrying a sofa [to be recovered for our living room!] and a patio table and chairs set. The boys were trying to watch a movie, but M wouldn't stop playing her singing stuffed animal...
